MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — The 51���� community recently gathered for the annual University Dinner, a celebration honoring the significant contributions of faculty and staff. This event not only acknowledges long-term service and peer-nominated awards but also marks the official start of the academic year.

Faculty and Staff Member of the Year

Dr. Kelly Rush and Michael Simmons received the Faculty and Staff awards, respectively. The awards are based on the nominations from faculty and staff with the final selection made by the President’s Cabinet.

Dr. Rush, Chair of the Business Department and coordinator of MVNU’s financial planning minor, was honored for significant contributions to the University. Under Dr. Rush’s guidance, the department has implemented a rigorous annual process of reviewing one business major each year to ensure business graduates are well-prepared for their careers. This review process keeps the business programs at 51����both relevant and responsive to industry demands.

“Kelly is passionate about ensuring that students are well equipped as business professionals, but she is equally passionate about developing Christian business professionals,” said Dr. Amy Kovach, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Each semester she hosts a Bible study for students. Kelly also ensures that she is integrating faith and biblical reflection and analysis into all her classes. She is a wonderful resource for department faculty looking for ways to engage students in meaningful faith integration across business disciplines.”

Simmons, Assistant Director of Academic and Registration Services, started at 51����in the Center for Student Success and has worked with the softball team. He was chosen for his willingness to go the extra mile, including providing assistance to faculty, staff and students.

“A popular Christian saying that describes Michael Simmons is this: Love God, Love Others.  Michael emanates generosity and Christian practices,” said Dr. Kovach. “I have witnessed this love time and time again — when a colleague suffers a loss, when a student is lost, when a faculty member needs help with a room issue, when a friend needs medicine. … Michael also mirrors MVNU’s motto of lifelong learning and service, completing a master’s degree in higher education while working and parenting full time, doing all with excellence.”

Lloyd Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award 

Dr. E. LeBron Fairbanks, former 51����President, received the Lloyd Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award. This accolade recognizes retired faculty with at least 10 years of service who have been retired a minimum of 5 years. Recipients are selected based on their extensive service to the University, active involvement in the local church, and their reputation for insightful intellect, a gentle spirit, and godly wisdom.

During his 18-year tenure as president, Dr. Fairbanks and his wife, Anne, played a crucial role in expanding MVNU’s global reach. They contributed to the university’s growth by creating new positions, establishing partnerships, and providing support to international students and missionary children.

Following his presidency, Dr. Fairbanks served as Education Commissioner and International Board and Education Administrator. Even in retirement, he continues to travel and minister alongside his wife, Anne.

“Dr. Fairbanks made an impact on 51����and the Church of the Nazarene with his dedication and love for the whole student and his commitment to expanding MVNU’s reach not only regionally but globally,” said 51����president Dr. Carson Castleman, who was also an 51����employee during Dr. Fairbanks’ presidency. “His passion for education and faith has not only inspired countless individuals, but also set a high standard for our 51����community. His selfless commitment to nurturing the minds and souls of students has not gone unnoticed, and his dedication to the University and the Kingdom is admirable.”

The legacy of Dr. and Mrs. Fairbanks endures at 51����through various initiatives, including the Fairbanks Center for Global Engagement. This center stands as a tribute to their dedication, generosity, and commitment to fostering a global perspective.

State of the University address

Dr. Castleman, nearing the end of his first year as president, closed out the evening by reflecting on the past year’s achievements and future challenges.

“For all of us, it has been a year of embracing new possibilities and navigating the changes that come with growth. Change is a constant in life, both for individuals and for organizations. While change is not always easy, it is undeniably necessary for growth and progress,” said Dr. Castleman. “By embracing change with an open mind and a willing spirit, we can navigate its challenges and emerge stronger people, wiser people, and more prepared for what lies ahead. Remember, change is not the enemy of sustainability. It is the path to growth and a necessary part of the journey.”

Dr. Castleman also underscored the University’s commitment to a holistic approach to education.

“Our journey together is a testament to the strength of our community and the power of our collective mission,” he said. “As we start a new academic year, remember we have been entrusted with a sacred mission to educate and empower students in an educational setting that embraces integration of faith. This unique responsibility goes beyond textbooks and lectures. It’s about nurturing the mind, the heart, and the soul of every student who walks through our doors.

“We are not just shaping the mind. We are shaping lives and molding character and instilling values that will guide our students long after they leave this campus. The integration of faith into our academic curriculum is more than a requirement. It is a commitment to our mission and to the Church of the Nazarene as identified in the Covenant of Christian Conduct.”
